Does drinking water during meals make digestion difficult?

15.05.2019

We will have found ourselves irremediably with someone who has put this idea in our heads and maybe we have believed him. That is why it is fundamental to deny it as soon as possible

It is inevitable that at some point in our life we have met a work partner, friend or family member who is a know-it-all. It is also likely that he has given us lessons about what we are doing wrong, criticizing our way of behaving, relating, working and even eating. It will be one of these people who will have told us that "drinking while eating makes digestion difficult". The sources you use to maintain that claim? Unknown. Maybe it's word of mouth or something he heard on a television show, but he repeats it like a cockatoo. And the worst of all is that, deep down, we take it seriously, as if what I said were true. Therefore, here we are today, demystifying this statement.

The excuse they use to reaffirm has a certain logic: "Water dilutes gastric juices". Yes, indeed this is so. The liquid element increases the volume of stomach contents without adding a single extra drop of acid. This causes that the chemical substances designed to break the food and turn it into a consumable substance are not as effective as they should be. In addition (as if this were not enough), they also maintain that the water impairs and makes the rate at which food leaves the stomach slow down, which causes a sensation of swelling and embarrassment.
