The American Alfred Gradus, 77, opened with his wife the restaurant Alfredo's Barbacoa in the Salamanca district

Alfred Gradus (77 years old, New York) landed in Spain in the 1960s, stationed at the US military base in Torrejón de Ardoz. His knowledge of the barbecue led him to manage the kitchens of the center. After several comings and goings - from the United States to Spain, passing through Germany -, in 1981 he opened with his wife, Ana Galindo, the Alfredo's Barbacoa restaurant in the Salamanca district, a pioneer in the American recipe book in Madrid. The fame of his burgers and his BBQ sauce led him to inaugurate another two stores in the capital, although he is now retired from business - managed by his wife, daughters and granddaughters. Gradus remembers his life with the help of his wife.
